FAQs


When is Winter Break?

The residence halls are closed from November 25,​​ 2020, through ​January 13, 2021. Due to COVID​-19, we are prepared to be flexible with​ student d​​​epartures from campus.


Who is eligible to stay on campus over winter break?

All students currently living on campus are eligible to stay over winter break if they complete the winter break survey. Students who are not currently occupying their spring housing assignment will need to transition to their permanent spring housing assignment on Saturday, December 26, 2020. Please plan accordingly. Students who do not complete the winter break survey will not be eligible to stay over winter break.


When are students required to be out of the Residence Halls?

  • If you are currently occupying your spring housing assignment, you may remain on campus throughout winter break with no limitations. 
  • If you are not currently occupying your spring housing assignment, you will need to transition to your permanent spring housing assignment on Saturday, December 26, 2020.
  • If you are NOT able to transition to your permanent spring housing assignment on Saturday, December 26, 2020, you will need to completely move out of the residence halls NO later than Friday, December 18, 2020. You will be assigned a move-in appointment in January.
  • Students who leave for any part of winter break with the plan to return on Saturday, December 26, 2020, to transition to their spring assignment will be asked to pack all personal belongings ahead of time to expedite the housing transition.


Resident Assistants will conduct Health & Safety inspections on Friday, December 18, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. to ensure that all students have properly left the residence halls or have packed their belongings ready to transition on December 26th​​.


Will offices be closed over winter break?

Queens will be closed from Thursday, December 25, 2020, through January 1, 2021. Campus Police (704-337-2306) and Campus Services (704-337-2201) will be open.


Behavioral Expectations

Students who stay on campus for winter break are expected to abide by all COVID-19 behavioral expectations including:

  • No visitors on campus or in the residence halls
  • Universal mask-wearing outside of your personal residence hall room
  • Social distancing of 6ft at all times
  • No alcohol, regardless of age

Students who violate the behavioral expectations will lose the privilege of staying on campus over winter break and will be asked to leave.


What if I'm Permanently Moving Out & Not Returning in the Spring?

If you are permanently leaving and not returning to Queens next semester, please let Residence Life & Housing know by emailing reslife@queens.edu. You will also need to connect with the Registrar in Jernigan Hall or by calling (704-337-2242). You will need to follow the checkout instructions in the column titled, "Not Returning in the Spring? How to Check Out of Your Room Properly". Failure to follow these instructions will result in checkout fines.​

How to Leave for Winter Break Properly​​​


Health & Safety Inspect​ions

Resident Assistants will conduct Health & Safety inspections on Friday, December 18, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. to ensure that all students have properly left the residence halls or have packed their belongings ready to transition on December 26th​​.


Students must complete the following BEFORE departing for winter break:

  1. All students MUST leave on Friday, December 18, 2020 by 10:00 a.m.

  2. If you are staying on campus for ANY period of time over winter break, please complete the WINTER BREAK SURVEY​ due by Friday, November 20, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.

  3. Please follow these instructions to ensure a proper checkout:

    • Clean your room (vacuum, wipe surfaces, take out trash)

    • Clean suite bathroom, if necessary (toilet, shower, floor, sink, mirror)

    • Failure to complete ANY of the above items will result in an Honor Code violation ​

  4. If you have a fish or ESA, please take them with you.

  5. Throw away perishable food items (milk, eggs, cheese, fruit, etc.)

  6. Seal and store non-perishable food items.

  7. Unplug electronic devices (clocks, lamps, etc.)

  8. Set your thermostats to 70 degrees.

  9. Lock windows and close blinds.

  10. ​Remove ALL trash from your room and put in the trash room.

  11. Take valuables with you​.

  12. Turn off the lights​.

  13. Lock your door behind you.

​What Happens if I Don't Follow These Instructions?

  1. Failure to checkout of your room properly (not following the above instructions) will result in a $100 fee.

How to Check Out of Your Room Properly


Health & Safety Inspections

Resident Assistants will conduct Health & Safety inspections on Friday, December 18, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. to ensure that all students have properly left the residence halls​​.​


Students must complete the following BEFORE permanently checking out:

  1. All students MUST leave on Friday, December 18, 2020 by 10:00 a.m.

  2. Remove ALL personal items AND trash from room BEFORE checking out.​​​​​​

  3. Clean everything (this includes taking out trash, cleaning all surfaces, vacuuming, wiping surfaces, cleaning microwave, etc.)

  4. Clean your microfridge and remove any perishable items.

  5. If applicable, arrange all furniture to original configuration.

  6. Close windows and blinds.  

  7. Set A/C unit to 70 degrees.

  8. ​Complete EXPRESS CHECKOUT FORM 

  9. Return your room key (if applicable) to Campus Police in Watkins per the posted instructions located at the front desk.

​What Happens if I Don't Follow These Instructions?

  1. Failure to checkout of your room properly (not following the above instructions) will result in a $100 fee.​

  2. Failure to return your room key will result in a $100 fee.

  3. Failure to clean your room properly will result in a $50 fee.

  4. Failure to remove items from your bathroom suite (if you live in suite-style room) will result in a $50 fee.
  5. Failure to remove trash from your room will result in a $25 per bag fee.

  6. Damage to room = varied fees
