FAQs


When is Winter Break?

The residence halls will close from December 15, 2018 at 10am through January 5, 2019 at 10am. Resident Assistants will conduct Health & Safety inspections on December 15 at 10am to ensure that all students have properly left the residence halls.

When are Students Required to Be Out of the Halls?

All students MUST leave 24 hours after last exam, or by 10am on December 15 (whichever comes first). Resident Assistants will conduct Health & Safety inspections on December 15 at 10am to ensure that all students have properly left the residence halls.


When Do the Residence Halls Re-open?
The residence halls will re-open January 5, 2019 at 10am.

Will Offices On Campus be Closed Over Winter Break?
Most Queens offices (including the Dining Hall) will be closed over break. Campus Police (704-337-2306) and Campus Services (704-337-2201) will be open.

Are Students Allowed to Stay Over Break?
Yes, students are allowed to stay over break! In order to have your QCard remain active for your residence hall, you will need to complete our BREAK STAY FORM. If you do not complete this form, you will not have access to your residence hall.  Please complete the BREAK STAY FORM​ ​no later than Friday, December 14 at 9am.

What Policies Are Enforced if You Stay Over Break?
Queens is considered a "dry" campus while campus is closed - this means that students cannot consume alcohol in the residence halls. Students staying on campus are not allowed to have visitors in the Residence Halls over winter break.

Will Anyone Be in My Room Over Break?
If you're staying for the break, please be aware that Campus Services may conduct general maintenance in residence hall rooms. Any previously requested repairs may happen during this time. Resident Assistants will also conduct Health & Safety inspections on December 15 at 10am to ensure that students have properly left the residence halls.

Will I Receive a New Roommate or Suitemate in the Spring?
​You could absolutely receive an incoming roommate or suitemate. If you have a vacant bed in your room or suite, please follow the below instructions to avoid fines:

  • Clean your room (vacuum, wipe surfaces, take out trash)

  • Clean suite bathroom, if necessary (toilet, shower, floor, sink, mirror)​​​

  • Move furniture back to it's original configuration

  • Remove any personal items from vacant furniture (desk, dresser, wardrobe, bookshelf, etc.)

  • Failure to complete ANY of the above items will result in an Honor Code violation ​

When Will New Students Arrive?
​New and transfer students will move in on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 from 10am-12pm.​


When Will I  Find Out Who My New Roommate Is?​​
​New and transfer students will be assigned to housing by December 15th—you can check if someone has been assigned to your vacant space by logging into MyAccount after December 15th.


What if I'm Permanently Moving Out & Not Returning in the Spring?
If you are permanently leaving and not returning to Queens next semester, please let Residence Life & Housing know by emailing reslife@queens.edu. You will also need to connect with the Registrar in Jernigan Hall or by calling (704-337-2242). You will need to follow the checkout instructions in the column titled, "Not Returning in the Spring? How to Check Out of Your Room Properly". Failure to follow these instructions will result in checkout fines.​

How to Leave for Winter Break Properly​​​


Health & Safety Inspections

Resident Assistants will conduct Health & Safety inspections on December 15 at 10am to ensure that ALL students have properly left the residence halls. 

Students must complete the following BEFORE departing for winter break:

  1. All students MUST leave 24 hours after last exam, or by 10am on December 15 (whichever comes first).

  2. If you are staying on campus for ANY period of time over winter break, please complete the BREAK STAY FORM​ due by Friday, December 14 at 9am.

  3. If you have a vacant bed in either your room or suite, please follow the following instructions:

    • Clean your room (vacuum, wipe surfaces, take out trash)

    • Clean suite bathroom, if necessary (toilet, shower, floor, sink, mirror)

    • Move furniture back to it's original configuration

    • Remove any personal items from vacant furniture (desk, dresser, wardrobe, bookshelf, etc.)

    • Failure to complete ANY of the above items will result in an Honor Code violation ​

  4. If you have a fish or ESA, please take them with you.

  5. Throw away perishable food items (milk, eggs, cheese, fruit, etc.)

  6. Seal and store non-perishable food items.

  7. Unplug electronic devices (clocks, lamps, etc.)

  8. Set your thermostats to 70 degrees.

  9. Lock windows and close blinds.

  10. ​Remove ALL trash from your room and put in the trash room.

  11. Take valuables with you​.

  12. Turn off the lights​.

  13. Lock your door behind you.

​What Happens if I Don't Follow These Instructions?

  1. Failure to checkout of your room properly (not following the above instructions) will result in a $100 fee.

How to Check Out of Your Room Properly


Health & Safety Inspections

Resident Assistants will conduct Health & Safety inspections on December 15 at 10am to ensure that ALL students have properly left the residence halls. ​

Students must complete the following BEFORE permanently checking out:

  1. All students MUST leave 24 hours after last exam, or by 10am on December 15 (whichever comes first).​

  2. Remove ALL personal items AND trash from room BEFORE checking out.​​​​​​

  3. Clean everything (this includes taking out trash, cleaning all surfaces, vacuuming, wiping surfaces, cleaning microwave, etc.)

  4. Defrost, and clean your microfridge - specific instructions are located HERE.

  5. If applicable, arrange all furniture to original configuration.

  6. Close windows and blinds.  

  7. Set A/C unit to 70 degrees.

  8. ​Complete EXPRESS CHECKOUT FORM 

  9. Return your room key (if applicable) to Campus Police in Withers per the posted instructions located at the front desk.

  10. Return your mailbox key (if applicable) to the Mail Service Center.

​What Happens if I Don't Follow These Instructions?

  1. Failure to checkout of your room properly (not following the above instructions) will result in a $100 fee.​

  2. Failure to return your room key will result in a $100 fee.

  3. Failure to clean your room properly will result in a $50 fee.

  4. Failure to remove trash from your room will result in a $25 per bag fee.

  5. Failure to return your mailbox key will result in a $65 fee.

  6. Damage to room = varied fees
